The term 'queer' (as opposed to 'gay') challenges fixed ideas of gender and sexual identity and refuses the status of a tolerated minority. Queer imagery dominates Jarman's work. Richardson analyses queer theory and applies it in critical readings of Jarman's films, in particular Caravaggio, Edward II and Blue. He also considers alternative regimes of gender and sexuality and suggests that the legacy of the director's cinema owes much to the representation of these alternative paradigms.
