Co-authors Ray Harryhausen and Tony Dalton trace the history of animation from the earliest stop-motion techniques in the 1890s to the present day. Individual chapters focus on Willis O'Brien (creator of King Kong and The Lost World), the contemporaries of O'Brien and Harryhausen himself through to Nick Park of Aardman Animations (Chicken Run, Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit) and Tim Burton (The Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride). The evolution of the technology is explained, including the eventual addition of computer-based techniques. Numerous stills, sketches and storyboards and photographs of the animators at work complement the text.
