The German painter Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) was one of the greatest Romantic artists and an important precursor of the Symbolists and Surrealists. His haunting and mysterious landscapes with ruined churches, chasms or silent figures alone in vast spaces are deeply spiritual. Those who also worked in the name of the spiritual and the sublime include Turner, Poussin, Gericault and Delacroix. Sala examines the different themes and subjects of Friedrich's work including landscapes, women, the invasion of Napoleon, winter scenes, allegory, spirituality, Christian iconography and self-portrait. Key words: Romanticism; painting; Turner; Christianity; religious themes; landscape; biography; surrealism; symbolism; nature; German artists
