Novel credited to Marlon Brando and filmmaker Donald Cammell. The novel, about adventurers and pirates in China in the 1920s, was originally created in the 1980s, Cammell writing the text from a treatment by Brando. After their deaths the estates of the two men had the book completed by critic David Thomson, who edited the mauscript and contributes an afterword on the story behind the book. There is also an introduction by Cammell's widow China Kong.
