This item is an original magic lantern box which was used to carry and store slides. The lid is set with metal hinges (now detached), two metal strips to secure the lid on, and a leather strap with metal buckle. The manufacture was an E. Ward of the University Science Depot in Manchester. While no slides are actually in the box, there is a note on the inside lid which reads: "Note to Lanternists: This box contains 116 slides. Please note that the slides are arranged in numerical order and also, that the initial letter, indicating the centre appears, as a rule, in the hand top corner. At the end of the set there are a few song slides. When repacking be sure to arrange slides in the same order. The slides should be cleaned and aired before exhibiting."
