Begins with Thomas Edison, the Kinetoscope, vaudeville, Nickelodeons and peep shows, moving to the development of editing, and film style and the formation of the Motion Picture Patents Company (MPPC), the star system, Mary Pickford, First National, United Artists (Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, D.W. Griffith), censorship, early sound technology, Vitaphone, talkies.
