Assesses the pioneering work of Cecil B DeMille before he became most famous for Biblical epics and historical drama. Higashi argues that he introduced film to middle-class audiences by stressing the function of spectacle in public venues such as theatres, department store displays, Orientalist World's Fairs and lantern slide lectures. The Ten Commandments is also examined.
