Study of the ways in which artists - in the visual arts, film, dance and music - responded to the AIDS epidemic. Beginning with a discussion of Jonathan Demme's film 'Philadelphia', the author - who lost his own partner and other close friends to AIDS - proceeds to discuss the art and work of Derek Jarman, Larry Kramer, Tony Kushner, Robert Mapplethorpe and many others in the fields of theatre, TV documentaries, opera and music.
