Large and beautifully-illustrated survey of some of the finest films to emerge from Weimar Germany, with stills - often full page plates - from a selection of seventy films made between 1918 and 1933. These include not only well-known masterpieces of silent cinema such as Madame DuBarry, Das Cabinet des Dr Caligari, Der Golem, Nosferatu and Metropolis, plus classics including Der blaue Engel, M and Berlin-Alexanderplatz, but also many lesser-known films. Brief synopses are provided for each, there is a fifty page essay on 'The Restless Republic' introducing the world of Weimar film-making, plus a gallery of star portraits. This is an English translation of a work published in German in 2012.
