Pastiche novel by Peter Ackroyd recreating the London's shadowy world of music-hall entertainment during the time of the (fictitious) 'Limehouse Golem' murders in 1880, blending actual historical characters such as Dan Leno, George Gissing and Karl Marx, with imaginary ones, written as a first-person narrative but interweaving documents such as diary entries and court transcripts.
