The title of this print refers to a pamphlet written by Auguste Romieu in which he ridicules the idea of progress and the state of the French nation. Peepshows were often used in cartoons in this way to offer a satirical view of politics. Translation of the caption under the image reads: "The famous trickster, conjurer, joker Coco Romieu will let all the good bourgeois willing to spend one twenty sous coin view 1852, and will show them the picture of the future in a way that is as true as it is honest and moderate."
