This delicate shadow puppet was handmade in Shaanxi, "the cradle of Chinese shadow play". There are four major character categories in Chinese shadow play, namely Sheng, Dan, Jing and Chou. The vague meanings of them are male, female, clean and ugly respectively. Suggested by the puppet's costume and facial features, the character may be a Sheng and also an Emperor (because of the design of his hat and the dragon on his yellow garments). On the back of the cover features a brief introduction to Shaanxi shadow play culture and history in Chinese and its English translation. According to the introduction, shadow play is also known as lamp shadow, shadow drama and Yingzi. It is one of the most popular folk art and drama in China.
