Study of the partnership between Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, based around an analysis of the ten films they made together, and placing these in the wider contexts of other song-and-dance musicals from the period, as well as the work done by the two performers with other co-stars during this time. Using detailed readings of individual films - which are supported by numerous still photographs - the author argues that the song-and-dance routines are much more than musical interludes, but often play an important part in advancing the narrative.
