An anthology of short essays on over 200 directors, arranged alphabetically by surname. Edited by film critic Andrew Sarris - an eminent advocate of the auteur theory of directing - the essays were written by a variety of contributors; although often light on biographical detail, they aim at providing an intimate and reflective portrait of each director. There is a chronology, indices of director, nationality and film title, plus a short introduction by Sarris.
