A profile and 'tribute' to Italian director Vittorio De Sica, written by Michael Newton in anticipation of a retrospective season held at the BFI in late 2015. The piece offers a biographical sketch of the actor/director, moving from his early neorealist masterpieces 'Shoeshine' and 'Bicycle Thieves', to his comic fantasy 'Miracle in Milan' and then his later work with Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastoianni.
