Large and varied collection of pre-World War I film stills, selected from 63 films in the EYE Film Institute Netherland's collection and arranged in five thematic sequences: The dream, The fairytale, Metamorphosis, The voyage and Fancy. The reproductions are complemented by four essays: 'Applying color: creating fantasy of cinema' by Tom Gunning; 'Techniques of the fantastic' by Joshua Yumibe; 'The archival life of early color films: restoration and presentation' by Giovanna Fossati; 'Gluttonous visual overdose' by Jonathon Rosen. There is also an annotated filmography by Elif Rongen-Kaynakci which contains further information about the stills.
