Study by Jeffrey Richards of the evolving representation of China and the Chinese in Hollywood films from an originally negative depiction involving elements such as opium dens and sadistic warlords to a more positive image in the 1930s and 1940s through films such as 'The Good Earth.' This transition is further illustrated by studies of the Oriental villain Dr Fu Manchu and detectives Charlie Chan, James Lee Wong and Mr Moto and of the career of actress Anna May Wong.
