Case studies by Melanie Williams of Jean Kent, Diana Dors, Rita Tushingham, Glenda Jackson, Helena Bonham Carter, Emily Lloyd and Judi Dench as a means to explore the particular nature of British female stardom and its evolution between the 1940s and the 2010s, especially in the context of wider social and cultural changes. The importance in female stardom of issues including regional or national identity, class and age is examined and the book also looks at some of the absences from the roster of female stars and the underlying reasons for the omission.
