Examination of film noir framed around a series of 100 detailed case studies from 'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari' (1920) to 'Drive' (2011), edited by Paul Duncan and Jürgen Müller. Each case study includes principal credits, plot details, analysis, background information and production stills. There are also three introductory chapters: 'Notes on film noir' by Paul Schrader; 'Out of focus' by Jürgen Müller/Jõrn Hetebrügge; 'An introduction to neo-noir' by Douglas Keesey. There is an index of all involved in the production of each of the 100 films followed by a list of 1000 film noirs and ne0-noirs from around the world released between 1920 and 2012.
