Study by Ivo Blom of the Dutch cinema owner and film distributor Jean Desmet (1875-1956), considered alongside the changes in cinema between 1907 and 1916 which Desmet both witnessed and, as a link between film production abroad and exhibition in the Netherlands, helped to bring about. The author uses Desmet's individual career as the basis for a wider, highly detailed analysis of film distribution and exhibition at a basic level in the Netherlands and beyond. Contains an account of the acquisition of the Desmet collection (almost 900 films, a business archive and many posters, stills, programmes and flyers) by the Netherlands Film Museum in 1957 as well as an assessment of Desmet's legacy and importance.
