Our friends at the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra will be performing a concert in the University's Great Hall on Thursday 15 February entitled Heroes and Monsters: More Music from the Movies. To celebrate this we have a large new exhibition from the museum's collections in the entrance area of the Old Library building, just outside our upper gallery. The two central cases showcase items relating to the epic films, and the monsters they feature, whose soundtracks will be played by the Orchestra. This includes Jurassic Park, Lord of the Rings, The Abyss and many others. The first and last cases draw on our holdings to tell the story of the movies relationship to music from the earliest 'silent' pictures (where live music was of course a key part of the experience) to present day blockbusters. The exhibition pays tribute to the great film composers and also highlights a number of strengths in the collection, including sheet music and scores from the Bill Douglas and Peter Jewell Collection and soundrack albums, many of which were donated by Anthony Attard.

Thanks to volunteers Alice Clements and Elliana Hamer who curated the exhibition.
