July 14th 1888 edition of Scientific American detailing the invention of Faber's 'speech recorder' and recounting the development of machines for recording through Edison's phonograph to Scott's phonautograph. The phonautograph received sound waves, which passed through into a diaphragm which moved a stylus at the other end.
