This book, by Roger Manvell and John Huntley, covers a number of topics on the relationship between music and film starting with the early cinema and how music was composed in the film studios. After exploring the history of music and sound in a variety of genres the authors look more closely at the technical relationship and function of music in film, including sections on independent and avant-garde films. Finally, the authors looks at four films as case studies, 'The Devils', '2001: A Space Odyssey', 'Second Best', and 'Zabriskie Point'. Included in the appendices are 'An Outline History of Film Music', 'Film Music Criticism', and a select bibliography. This is the second edition, published in 1975. The first edition was published in 1956.
