Philae Island on the Nile River was the location for an ancient Egyptian temple complex at the heart of the cult of the goddess Isis during the Ptolemaic period of Egyptian history. Philae Island has been permanently submerged since the High Aswan Dam was built in 1965 and the temples have since been relocated to Agilika Island.
