Collection of four essays, in English and German, examining slapstick comedy in the early 1900s and arguing that early Hollywood comics were continuing European comedic traditions from the late 19th century. The book was published in collaboration with Projecto Lumiere to mark the 100th anniversary of cinema and opens with an essay by Jose Manuel Costa & Clyde Jeavons on 'Fresh Hopes for European Film Preservation.' The other essays are: Thomas Brandlmeier, 'Fin de Siecle Comedy Culture', Frieda Grafe, 'The Discreet Charm', [on Max Linder] and Paolo Cherchi Usai, 'The Revenge of the "Minor" American Comedians.'
