Richly-illustrated study of the background to Chaplin's 1952 film 'Limelight', the basis of which was sketched out by Chaplin in a novella entitled 'Footlights.' Chaplin's biographer David Robinson provides a detailed introduction to both the film and the novella (the full text of which is given here, along with photographs of the original annotated typescript), developing into an examination of the story's historical context - Edwardian London, the world of music hall, Leicester Square ballet performances and Chaplin's family involvement vaudeville entertainment.
