Study by Christopher Beach of collaborations between directors and cinematographers with particular reference to D. W. Griffith and Billy Bitzer, William Wyler and Gregg Toland, Billy Wilder and John Seitz and Alfred Hitchcock and Robert Burks. Rather than the director as auteur, the book stresses the importance of the cinematographer in the creative process and looks at innovations such as deep-focus, colour and collaboration in the digital age.
