Allen of the distribution and exhibition of European films in Australia and New Zealand in the silent period, particularly before World War One, and the rise of Hollywood product in the antipodes from the war onwards. The structures of the early industry in Australia and New Zealand are considered and there are sections on the distribution of films from France, including Sarah Bernhardt's films, the popularity of Asta Nielsen, Italian historical epics and films produced by UFA in Germany.
