On 20 October at 6pm there will be a public lecture on the museum's photographic collections as part of Exeter's Unveil'd Photographic Festival. The event is organised by the festival and tickets cost £6. It will be in Seminar Room A/B of the Old Library and you can book here
There are two talks in the programe: Professor Joe Kember of the University of Exeter will talk about the museum's collection of photographic magic lantern slides. Joe will explain how the lantern industry adopted photography from the 1880s, including the creation of 'life model' slides, telling stories with actors. Here's an example from a temperance set called 'A Little Mistake'.
In the second talk, the museum's Curator Dr Phil Wickham and photographic historian and scholar James Downs discuss photography in the museum's collections and photography's links to the moving and projected image, from Fox Talbot to the present day. The image heading this article shows an albumen picture of the Lumiere Brothers, taken by their photographer father.
