The images contained in the pages of children's books remain forever beloved, carrying with them the rich associations and warm memories of youth. Yet the artists behind these pictures - the masters who gave us Winnine the Pooh or Peter Rabbit - are little known to most readers. In this collection, the author presents the lives and works of thirteen of the greatest children's illustrators. These artists are: Edward Lear, John Tenniel, Walter Crane, Randolph Caldecott, Kate Greenaway, Beatrix Potter, Ernest Shepard, Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac, Kay Nielsen, Howard Pyle, N.C. Wyeth, and W.W. Denslow.
