Winsor McCay was one of America's greatest and most influential cartoonists, acknowledged as the first master of both the comic strip and the animated cartoon. Canemaker looks at McCay's early upbringing in Michigan as well as reviewing and fully analysing McCay's achievements in print and film. McCay produced ten animated films [ including How a Mosquito Operates (1912) and Gertie the Dinosaur (1914) ] and also worked as a newspaper cartoonist for William Randolph Hearst.
