Stereo card featuring a row of large stone columns decorated with hieroglyphics in the interior of the grand temple. Abydos is located south of Cairo over an area of around 5 square miles and contains important archaeological remains from various periods in Egypt's history. It was significant in historical times as the main centre of the cult of Osiris, lord of the netherworld. Egyptians believed the mouth of the canyon at Abydos to be the entrance to the underworld. Abydos was the burial place for the first kings of a unified Egypt but contains remains from the earlier Predynastic period.
