This delicate shadow puppet was handmade in Shaanxi, "the cradle of Chinese shadow play". There are four major character categories in Chinese shadow play, namely Sheng, Dan, Jing and Chou. The vague meanings of them are male, female, clean and ugly respectively. Suggested by the mainly red floral pattern on his garment and his curve-less body figure, the character may be a Xiao-sheng, which means a young male character. On the back of the cover features a brief introduction to Shaanxi shadow play culture and history in Chinese and its English translation. According to the introduction, shadow play is also known as lamp shadow, shadow drama and Yingzi. It is one of the most popular folk art and drama in China.
