Account of the attempts by Senator McCarthy and HUAC to oust Communists from the American film industry during the 1940s and 1950s, based on a BBC radio series broadcast in 2005. The book is based on a large number of interviews with actors, screenwriters, lawyers and politicians involved in the McCarthy 'witch hunt', and discusses the political motives, the effect on Hollywood, the consequences of blacklisting, and the psychological effect of the investigations on those being persecuted as well as those who betrayed friends and colleagues.
