Revised and expanded edition of the survey by Geoffrey Nowell-Smith, originally published in 2008, of 1960s filmmaking, considered within political, economic, cultural and aesthetic contexts. After an assessment of the previous decade, the 1950s, Nowell-Smith focuses on new cinemas from a variety of standpoints - including political, technological, documentary and censorship - and in different geographical contexts - such as Britain, France, Italy, Poland, Czechoslovakia and Latin America. He also devotes individual chapters to four of the most significant talents to emerge at this time: Jean-Luc Godard, Michelangelo Antonioni, Pier Paolo Pasolini and Nagisa Oshima. Includes a list of fifty key films of the new cinemas, 1958-70.
