A History of Photography in North Devon 1842-1914

Richly illustrated history of commercial photography in North Devon, drawn mainly from newspapers such as the North Devon Journal and Bideford Gazette, and tracing the work of studios in places including Barnstaple, Bideford, Appledore and Lynton from 1842 until 1914. There is also material on the use of photographs in local news reportage, police work and postcard production, amateur photography and a wealth of ephemera such as adverts for photographic equipment and services, newspaper stories about competitions and demonstrations, plus various appendices and illustrated examples of cartes-des-visites produced by the different commercial studios.
