Obituary by Tom Vallance for the Canadian actor Harold Russell, published in The Independent, 4 February 2002. Russell lost both hands following an accident in the Second World War. Nevertheless, he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1947 for playing a disabled sailor in 'The Best Years of Our Lives' as well as an honorary Oscar for the morale-boosting effect of his role for disabled veterans.
