Two features by John Ware, published in The Mid-Devon Advertiser & Dawlish Post on 9 February and 16 February 2018 respectively, to coincide with the release of the film 'The Mercy', directed by James Marsh and starring Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz, which tells the story of Teignmouth electronics engineer and inexperienced sailor Donald Crowhurst and his ill-fated attempt to win the 1968 Sunday Times non-stop round-the-world solo sailing race. The earlier feature looks at the background to the film, its reception and at the publicity for Teignmouth generated by the production which was largely filmed in the town and involved some local people as extras. The later feature reports on the opening night of the film at Teignmouth Pavilions and to the positive reception received. It also focuses on the lower-budget film 'Crowhurst', directed by Simon Rumley and starring Justin Salinger and Amy Loughton, which tells the same story as 'The Mercy' and was released around the same time.
