The third edition of the 'Looking at Movies' book by Richard Barsam and Dave Monahan examines critical approaches, principles of film form, genre, narrative, mise-en-scene, cinematography, acting, editing, sound, an overview of film history and filmmaking technologies and production systems. There are officiallists of greatest films and films used as examples include: Citizen Kane, City of God, Stagecoach, Stella Dallas, and American Beauty. Part 2 is a booklet by Barsam and Karen Gocsik on 'Writing About Movies' for students. Part 3 is a DVD with tutorials and clips for analysis for students corresponding to the chapters of the book with a second disc containing a selction of short films.
